Couple portrait session in Tokyo

Preparing for a portrait session doesn't have to be stressful. In fact, the best sessions happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself. Over the years, I've worked with hundreds of clients, and I've learned that a little preparation goes a long way in creating images you'll love.

What to Wear

The most common question I get is about clothing. Here's what works best: choose pieces that make you feel good and reflect your personal style. Solid colors or subtle patterns tend to photograph beautifully, while very busy prints can be distracting. Think about the location and season, comfort matters just as much as appearance.

For couples or families, coordinating without matching is key. Choose a color palette (like soft neutrals, warm earth tones, or cool blues) and let each person express their style within that range. Avoid logos or text-heavy clothing, as they can date the images.

The Mindset

Many people feel nervous before a session, and that's completely normal. The camera can feel intimidating, but remember: I'm here to guide you, not judge you. We'll start with simple poses and natural movements. Most clients find that after the first 10 minutes, they relax completely.

Think of the session as a conversation, not a performance. We'll talk, move, and explore different angles. I'll give gentle direction when needed, but I also love capturing those in-between moments when you're just being yourself.

Timing & Location

Golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) offers the most flattering light, but we can work with any time of day. If you have a location in mind that's meaningful to you, let's discuss it. Otherwise, I'm happy to suggest spots that work well for portraits.

Plan to arrive a few minutes early so you're not rushed. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, giving us plenty of time to try different poses, locations, and moods. There's no need to rush, we'll work at a comfortable pace.

Trust the Process

The best portraits happen when you trust the process and let go of perfection. Some of my favorite images are the ones where clients forgot the camera was there, laughing, talking, or simply being present in the moment.

Remember, I'm here to make you look and feel your best. We're creating something together, and the goal is always authentic, beautiful images that you'll treasure for years to come.
